CASAL VELINOThe town is divided into numerous parts, the so-called Frazioni. Il Paese, the main town lies on 150 meter and is a sleepy town away from the happenings and through traffic. The historical town center with its angled alleyways originated approximately 2500 years ago within three stages of urban migration.
Originally, the Hellenistic Greeks inhabited the area of the antique sites of Velia. Forced by a Malaria epidemic in the swamp area, the inhabitants moved to the mountains and founded Novi Velia – the New Velia. Some centuries afterwards, because of natural conditions such as high floods followed by dryness, this coastal area became inhabitable again. Now it was opened for trade and therefore the House of Velia was created in Casal Velino. La Marina, the original pier for fishing boats was then situated at the northern end of the gulf of Velia right below the Saracen tower of the 12th century. It developed out of the need for a better life, to have a summer domicile close by the ocean and to have an infrastructure to set up the premise for a village life.
The central piazza with its social life and later the boardwalk with stores and Cafés represented this new development. This was certainly the first groundwork for a possible inner-Italian tourism. The creation of Marina di Casal Velino was in the 30th of the 20th century amidst the villas and palazzos dating back to the 19th century.
Each Friday you will have the weekly market on the large piazza with the eager attendance of the residents. While visiting the yacht and fishing harbor you will experience the nightly Mediterranean atmosphere while observing the fisher men in their traditional wooden boats, repairing their nets. A cultural and religious interesting sight and also named a pilgrim site of the Vatican is the chapel S. Matteo in Marina di Casal Velino. The chapel was once the home of the reliquiem of the apostle Matthaeus until 954. The reliquiem were then moved into the cathedral of Salerno.
